At the end of every day when Emma and I are having our cuddle time I ask her what the most favourite part of her day was.

Her answers always amaze me. They’re never what I think they might be. It’s clear children don’t experience life the way we do. We want BIG moments. We want WOW times all the time and if they don’t happen we feel the day was wasted or a failure.
For example, I can take Emma to the zoo, the game arcade and to a restaurant in one day. But a swim in the pool with dad will be the highlight of her day.
We can go to a froyo spot, watch a DVD together and read a book but her best will be us lying on the bed telling one another bad jokes.
Checking out the latest movie is always fun or popping out to our local pizzeria but it’s always way way more fun if dad joins.
We can visit a toy shop for a little spoil or visit bird world but it’s usually the fact that we’ve climbed into bed early and snuck an extra book in for bedtime stories.
With children it really is the little things that count.

  1. Apart from knowing it is the little things that count, I really love your 'ritual' of asking her what the favourite part of her day was. In addition to all the fantastic things it does for language and cognitive development, I have no doubt that in years to come, she will think back and remember this as her 'special time.'

  2. Hey man, was just browsing through the internet looking for some information and came across your blog. I am impressed by the information that you have on this blog. It shows how well you understand this subject. Bookmarked this page, will come back for more. You, my friend, ROCK!!!
