I don’t mind getting older. In fact it has its perks. At my age I find I’m grateful for a lot of things. I’m grateful that I feel (slightly) more comfortable in my own skin. I’m grateful that I don’t have to relive the angst filled years that were my teens and twenties. I am grateful that I have found the man I intend to grow old with. I am grateful that my priorities have been re prioritised. I am grateful I have reached my happy place. I am grateful that I don’t need material objects to make me feel complete.

Sadly, reaching the ripe old age of — has also left me with regrets. Regrets of things done and not done. Mistakes I have made and can’t unmake. Wrongs I did that can’t be undid. Horrible things I might have said that can’t be unsaid. I married a man I should never have married, not because he was the wrong man, but because he was the wrong man for me. I erred on the side of caution and let fear hold me back. At times when I should have kept quiet I spoke out and when I should have spoken out I kept quiet.

Now with Emma I almost get a redo. Not to live vicariously through her but to encourage and empower her, in a way I never was. I can’t stop the world turning and I can’t protect Emma from every single hurt that might come her way but I sure as heck can make sure that she always keeps moving forward with a sense of wonderment and optimism…

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they’re worth taking
Lovin’ might be a mistake
But it’s worth making
Don’t let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)
